  • Two days before Mother’s Day, Prince’s ex Mayte Garcia opened up about the loss of their baby boy.

Belly-dancer Garcia got pregnant almost immediately after her wedding to Prince in In October of that year, their son, Boy Gregory, was born one month premature. Unfortunately, their baby had Pfeiffer syndrome, a genetic disorder that prevents normal growth of the skull, and died one week later.

On Friday, at Los Angeles’ Single Moms Planet's “Single Mom's Awards,” Garcia gave an emotional speech about the son they lost.

“It just wasn't my time yet. After that, I was broken. And I lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

“Like most women, I always dreamt of becoming a mother,” she said. “It just wasn't my time yet. After that, I was broken. And I lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”

The couple divorced shortly after the loss of their child. Garcia then went on to star in VH1’s “Hollywood Exes” where she opened up about her relationship with the iconic singer.

“The show served as therapy for me. I opened up about losing my son and, in return, I gained a daughter,” Garcia explained.

“Long story short, a woman watching my show was moved enough to reach out to me through Twitter about adopting her baby. I took the offer as a sign that the universe, the mother, father, God wanted to give me a second chance at my dream of becoming a mother.”

The year-old is now a mom to a daughter named Gia, who is four.

“We both needed to be loved,” Garcia said. “And five years later, she's my greatest gift. She is my angel, my everything.”

While Garcia went on to have a daughter following her divorce from Prince in , the late singer did not have any more kids.

Prince also never discussed his son’s death publicly, Vanity Fair reports. This is likely due to the fact that he was adamant that his children have complete privacy.

Before the birth of his son in , Prince said in an interview: “Wheneve

Prince&#;s ex-wife details heartbreaking death of couple&#;s baby

Music legend Prince was full of joy in the delivery room as his first wife, Mayte Garcia, gave birth to their only child.

But when the infant boy, Amiir Gregory Nelson, was held up by the nurses, “The elation on my husband’s face turned to pure terror,” Garcia recalled in her new memoir.

“Why is he not crying?” Prince said, as the nurses struggled to save the baby’s life.

“The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince” describes in heartbreaking detail the moment in when the pair first learned that their baby was horribly deformed by a rare genetic defect, one that would kill him after only six days.

Prince and Garcia, his backup dancer and muse, had been married less than a year, and though she’d never even seen him take an aspirin, he was often “sick” or suffering from “migraines” — episodes she now realizes were linked to his substance-abuse issues.

Still, they had both been over the moon about her pregnancy.

The genre-defying musician had even built a swing set in their yard in Paisley Park, in anticipation of the baby.

Then the harsh delivery-room lights revealed their misfortune.

Amiir — Arabic for “prince” — had been born with Pfeiffer syndrome type 2.

His head was terribly misshapen. His hands and feet appeared webbed. And his eyes, formed outside their sockets, appeared lidless and alarmed, Garcia said.

The baby, and eventually their marriage, were doomed.

After the couple’s divorce in , Garcia was told that Prince had every reminder of her and their baby burned.

“They brought the baby over to us,” Garcia writes in her new book, excerpted in People magazine.

“He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air,” she writes.

“Because there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here.’”

She writes, “After six days he was struggling to breathe. And I said to the doctor, ‘He

Prince’s first wife reveals details on the death of their infant son

In a new memoir, the first wife of the late music icon Prince confirmed details about the death of their infant son, and says that while she never saw Prince take drugs, several incidents in retrospect have struck her as suspicious.

“I don’t think he ever got over it,” dancer-actress Mayte Garcia, 43, told People magazine about the death of their son, Amiir, whose name — Arabic for “prince” — was previously unrevealed. “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”

The child’s death certificate had indicated only that a “Boy Gregory” was born Oct. 16, , to a “Mia Gregory” and died Oct. 23, , of Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a rare defect in which a baby’s skull bones fuse prematurely. A birth certificate issued a month later identified the mother as Mayte Garcia-Nelson, and listed no father, per newspaper accounts at the time.

In People’s excerpts from “The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince,” Garcia writes that her husband was ecstatic at learning she was pregnant. But when a doctor recommended an amniocentesis to check for genetic disorders after Garcia began bleeding, “My husband said, ‘No, we’re not doing that.’ ” Garcia did not specify whether he had a religious objection or was concerned about the risk of miscarriage.

When the child was born, Garcia writes, “[They] held the baby up to those harsh lights. The elation on my husband’s face turned to pure terror. . . . They brought the baby over to us. He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air. Because there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here.’ ”

Garcia, who married Prince on Valentine’s Day and was divorced in , also told People, “I never actually saw Prince doing drugs. He didn’t want me to. I’m sure he knew what my reaction would be.” The star died April 21 at age 57 from an accidental painkiller o

How Mayte Garcia Is Honoring Her and Prince's Late Baby Boy, Who Would've Been 27 This Year (Exclusive)

Mayte Garcia is finding new ways to honor her and Prince's only child Amiir.

Her son, who was born in and died six days after his birth, had been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Pfeiffer syndrome, in which certain bones of the skull fuse prematurely.

"It's always painful," the former dancer, 49, tells PEOPLE, of remembering their child's short life.

"He would have been 27 this year," she continues. "But I'm on the board [for] Pfeiffer syndrome, and it makes me happy to see that children are surviving it now. There's so much more research being poured into it. When Amiir died, I couldn't find anything on it. So yes, it's painful, but it makes me happy in knowing that I'm helping someone else."

Garcia — now mom to year-old daughter Gia, whom she adopted in — is reviving the charity she and Prince first launched in , under the name L4OA, which originally stood for "Love for Our Amiir."

The revamped version will be called Live 4 Love Charities, which Garcia says was always Prince's message.

"I strive to honor what Prince he stood for, which was always about love. So Live 4 Love is kind of the perfect name change," she says. The foundation is currently working on a "10/10 project," which will donate $10, to 10 different foundations that are nominated by the public through the website. (Winners will be announced in December.)

"The mission statement for the original charity was about helping people in need," she continues. "Back then we didn't need fundraising because he was able to donate the money. Live 4 Love will be a public C, and we'll be doing fundraising, and the money raised will go towards all sorts of charitable programs, lik
