    Thirty years.

Wow. Has it been that long since I first saw Brownman Revival? And even after all these years, I remain a fan with their songs a regular on my playlist.

And yes, I have all their releases from their debut mini-album Coming Soon that featured the original line-up of Brownman Revival to the albums Steady Lang and Ayos Din to their other Eps Eto Pa and New Arrival.

I find it humorous that some folks dis them as “pogi reggae”. Well, they did have the pogi Dino Concepcion on vocals, so if that is what you are conscious about then…

Ah, so it is the pop reggae songs, and not protest or militant songs that are supposed to define reggae.

If you know your reggae history, many of the early recordings were covers of Motown, soul, and R&B songs that were either love songs, nonsensical songs, or plain fun. But also at the same time, songs of religion and social protest came into being.

But reggae or Jamaican music is also about positivity.

Wasn’t Bob Marley criticized for a more laid back approach to his album Kaya after which he answered with the more militant album, Survival? And yet, his love songs are some of his most known songs from “Could You Be Loved”, “Waiting in Vain”, “Stir It up”, “Is This Love”, and “Turn Your Lights Down Low” to name but a few.

Third World and Big Mountain were also criticized for taking a more pop approach if not adapting soul and even disco to their music.

And Marley covered other artists too such as Curtis Mayfield (Keep On Moving) and the Beatles (And I Love Her) to name but a few.

And hey, wasn’t Tropical Depression’s Kapayapaan dripping with love songs? And their second album were all covers.

These boys soldiered on even as the majority of the original line-up split to form Milagros Dancehall Collection while the Concepcion brothers to continue.

In many ways, it mirrored their origins as Indio leaving some to continue with the band while the Concepcion brothers formed Brownman Revival

Human rights group Karapatan mounted an exhibit that gives face to today’s unsung heroes that the state has considered its enemy. Political prisoners were interpreted by visual artists through mostly wall-bound portraiture.

Among the artists who contributed were Dhan Louie Bautista, Rustum Casia, Maan De Loyola, Bheng Densing, Emil Mercado, Rensi Managase, Ding Royales, Aleli Drew Ayroso, Daniw Santiago, Arnie Jarabillo, Yasmin Almonte, Gwen Bautista, James Hermogenes, Cristina Ponce, Neil Doloricon, Lorraine Bermejo, Eden Ocampo, Jamica Lois Bonifacio, Manix Abrera, Boy Dominguez, Mylene Factora, Crisanto de Leon, Egai Fernandez, Renan Ortiz, Jesus Santiago, Melvin Pollero, Bryan Pollero, Oji Valencia, Adelson Genito, Jason Valenzuela, Ericson Acosta, Sim Tolentino, Buen Abrigo, Iggy Rodriguez, Jade Alfonso, Racquel de Loyola, Yani Ela, Aldrein Silanga, Tom Estrera III, Stephen Prestado, Rose Bucud, Ranma Ramones, Max Santiago, Enrico Maniago, Charlene Bayani, Glenda May Abad, Gerilya, Tinsley Garanchon, Pedro Bucud, Doris Rodriguez, Vivian Nocum Limpin, Linangan ng Kulturang Pilipino, Rowena Bayon and Francis Diaz.

Over 40 portraits were mounted in July at Maximillan Gallery, Tomas Morato, Quezon City.
