ARLINGTON, VA. &#; Father Paul K. Hurley, a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Boston and longtime military chaplain serving with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), was sworn in Friday as Major General and Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army. Father Hurley is the 24th chief to head up the Army&#;s chaplain corps. The oath was administered at Fort Myer by Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, attended the afternoon ceremony in the fort chapel.

Before assuming his new position, Father Hurley served as the Command Chaplain for the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, N.C. His previous chaplain assignments include deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as numerous stateside assignments as an Army chaplain. Father Hurley is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He underwent his priestly formation at St. John&#;s Seminary in Brighton, Mass. He was ordained in for the Archdiocese of Boston, where he served as a parish priest before accessioning to active duty as the st FA battalion chaplain.

As the Army’s new Chief of Chaplains, Father Hurley succeeds Monsignor Donald L. Rutherford (Ch., Maj. Gen., USA), a priest of the Diocese of Albany, N.Y., who is retiring after serving in the post since July 22, Msgr. Rutherford also served with AMS endorsement and faculties.

Biography:
Chaplain (Major General) Doug Carver, US Army, retired, is the Executive Director of Chaplaincy for the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board. An advocate for the religious liberty of service members, veterans, and their families, he oversees the professional and pastoral support to Southern Baptist Chaplains who minister in various institutional settings in the United States and around the world. Prior to joining the North American Mission Board, he was the Army’s 22nd Chief of Chaplains (), leading and serving over chaplains supporting the religious and pastoral needs of our million soldiers and families. Chaplain Carver served at every level of the Army, from platoon to the Department of the Army Staff.

At the beginning of the Iraq War in , he served as the senior military chaplain in the combat theater of operations. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in religion from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, a Master of Divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Science in strategic studies from the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He also holds honorary doctoral degrees from Shorter University in Rome, Georgia and Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. In he was inducted into the University of Tennessee’s Inaugural Army ROTC Hall of Fame. An ordained Southern Baptist minister, Chaplain Carver has pastored churches in Colorado, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia. A native of Rome, Georgia, he and his wife, Sunny, celebrate 50 years of marriage and reside in Charlotte, North Carolina near their two daughters and five grandchildren.

Chaplain, Col Michael D. Sproul is the State Chaplain for the Arizona National Guard. In this capacity, he advises the AZ TAG, LCC, and ATAG on all religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical matters relating to the AZNG and program and organization relating to the Arizona National Guard Chaplain Corps. He leads 20 ANG and ARNG chaplains and 19 Religious Affairs Specialists/Airmen on overarching policies, practices, and programs. He is the prime conduit for the AZNG chaplain corps in aligning planning and practices with NGB-OC and NGB-HC.

His previous position was as the Director of the Air National Guard Corps. He advised senior National Guard leadership on all matters that pertain to religious freedom, accommodation, programming and related activities of the Air National Guard Chaplain Corps. He monitored the appointments, inspections, assignments and deployments of Chapel personnel at 90 wings and geographically separated units while also providing religious support/resiliency to , airmen across America. He was the ANG Chaplain respresentative to the ANG Board, NGB Board, Headquarters Air Force Chaplain Corps, 9 Major Commands, 3 Combatant Commands, 3 Numbered Air Forces, and the DOD-National Science Foundation inter-agency.

Chaplain Sproul entered active duty service as a direct commission in and has thirty years of service. He has served five years on active duty, six years in the Air Force Reserve, and nineteen years in the Air Guard. He has deployed three times. His first deployment was to Desert Storm and twice during Operation Enduring Freedom. One of those being as the Wing Chaplain at Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan. He has Doctor of Ministry degree specializing in church administration and counseling. He has also served as the ANG Asst to the Command Chaplain at USAFE-AFAFRICA.
