John Prakash Rao Janumala, better known by his stage name Johnny Lever (born on 14 August ) is an Indian actor and comedian who is known for his works in Hindi cinema. He is one of the most recognised comedians in India and is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians in Indian Cinema. He has received numerous accolades, including thirteen Filmfare Awards nominations in Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role, and has won the award twice, for his work in Deewana Mastana () and Dulhe Raja (). He began his career in , and has acted in more than three hundred Hindi films.

Early life

Lever was born on 14 August in a Telugu Christian family in Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh. His father worked as an operator in Hindustan Unilever plant where he also worked as a labourer for six years. Lever was brought up in King's Circle area of Matunga in Mumbai. His mother tongue is Telugu but he is also fluent in Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, English, Marathi and Tulu. He is the eldest in the family consisting of three sisters and two brothers (including his younger brother Jimmy Moses).

Lever studied in Andhra education society English high school until the seventh grade as he could not study further because of financial problems in his family. As a result, he decided to leave school and started working odd jobs, such as selling pens on the streets of Mumbai by mimicking some famous Hindi film stars of that time and dancing to the songs of Hindi film stars. Born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay on September 3, , Uttam Kumar was a multifaceted character in Indian film and often known as the Mahanayak, or "Great Actor." His long and successful career began in the late s and ended tragically in During that period, he worked as a playback vocalist, director, producer, screenwriter, composer, and actor in films, mostly in Bengali cinema. Kumar acted in almost films over three decades, making a lasting impression on audiences with roles in films like Agni Pariksha, Harano Sur, Jhinder Bandi, Chowringhee, Nayak, and Amanush, to mention a few. In addition to acting, he produced seven films and directed important projects like Kalankini Kankabati, Sudhu Ekti Bochor, and Bon Palashir Padabali. As the first person to win the National Film Award for Best Actor for his roles in Antony Firingee () and Chiriyakhana (), Kumar was a trailblazer.

Moreover, he has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and the BFJA Best Actor Award. His legacy is still felt today with the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar metro station in Tollygunge and the West Bengal government's Mahanayak Samman Award. In Bengali film history, Uttam Kumar is still regarded as a titan, honored for his significant and enduring contributions.

Early Years

At his maternal house in Ahiritola, northern Calcutta, on September 3, , Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay, later known as Uttam Kumar, was born. He was raised in a lower-middle-class household; his father, Satkari Chattopadhyay, was employed by Metro Cinema as a film projector. Barun and Tarun Kumar, Arun Kumar's two brothers, both went on to become actors. He received the loving moniker "Uttam" from his maternal grandma.

"Boss," as he was fondly referred to, loved his old school as much as his old students loved him, and never failed to keep in touch with them.  He was  keenly interested in any news of the school, and so much enjoyed browsing through our OMHSA website, which he made a great contribution towards by sending me ten-year's-worth of his  precious bound volumes of school magazines from to   In the evening of his life he had two very sad bereavements - his dear wife, Dorothy and his son, which he must have found very difficult to bear.  But his faith was always strong and he was able to come to terms with these tragic losses. 

He was my Headmaster when I was in school in , and though I was only there for a short while, he still remembered me, as I was a day-scholar, and he once  had to fill-in for the driver for a few weeks when the driver was sick.  He loved that old Jeep, and boy - did he drive!  At breakneck speed around those sharp bends, with us day-boys hanging on for dear life.  Ah - memories!

"Boss" was  full of life, optimistic, always active. I do not remember him ever falling ill. He would inquire about every student and was known to visit the sick  in the School Dispensary.  His sense of humour never left him. I shall mention below, some of these that I remember.
