  • Singer Brandy involved in fatal collision last month

The R&B; singer and actress Brandy was involved in a fatal, four-car freeway accident in the Sherman Oaks area last month that started when her sport utility vehicle rear-ended the victim’s car, police said Wednesday.

Brandy, the 27-year-old former star of the TV comedy “Moesha,” was not injured but the driver of the car she struck with her 2007 Land Rover in the Dec. 30 crash died, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was Awatef Aboudihaj, 38, a married mother of one, CHP spokesman Leland Tang said.

The accident occurred on the northbound 405 Freeway, just south of the 101 Freeway.

No charges or arrests have been made in connection with the accident, and no formal determination has been made about what caused the crash, which was first reported by the celebrity news website TMZ.com.

Tang said there was no evidence of “wanton disregard” of safety by Brandy and that, if any charge is eventually filed against her, it would be no more than a misdemeanor count. He said she stopped at the scene and fully cooperated with officers.

Tang said that neither the performer, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, nor other witnesses realized the severity of the injuries to Aboudihaj in the chain-reaction accident.

A statement issued by Brandy’s publicist said: “She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased.”

The singer-actress was alone in her vehicle and no alcohol or drugs were involved, Tang said.

Brandy told officers she was driving about 65 mph before the crash.

  • US Singer Brandy involved in fatal car crash; sued for $50 million

    Thursday, February 1, 2007

American singer, Brandy Norwood, known for her role as a judge on America's Got Talent amongst other roles, has been sued for US$50 million by the family of a woman who was killed in a car crash.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that Brandy, 27, should be charged with a misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter for being part of the fatal car crash that killed Awatef Aboudihaj, 38.

Aboudihaj's family lawsuit accuses Noorwood, known as Brandy, of "reckless driving".

Brandy, in a Land RoverSUV on December 30, 2006, bumped into the Toyota which had Awatef Aboudihaj in it. The Toyota slammed into another vehicle and slid on the freeway's center divider. Aboudihaj was sent to Providence Holy Cross Medical Centre but died the next evening.

"The accident was a terrible tragedy, and Brandy's heart goes out to Awatef Aboudihaj's family," spokeswoman, Kelly Mullens, said in a statement. "But for legal reasons we cannot comment on this lawsuit."

If Brandy is charged, she could face one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Singer-Actress Brandy Could Face Vehicular Manslaughter Charges

If the California Highway Patrol gets its way, Brandy will be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter following a freeway crash that killed a woman motorist last month.

The singer-actress was involved in the multi-vehicle crash, and the CHP made its recommendation Monday before referring the matter to the city attorney’s office for review.

“The office is currently reviewing the case and determining whether the evidence warrants the filing of a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter,” CHP spokesman Nick Velasquez said.

Brandy’s camp has been slow to comment and a call to her publicist, Courtney Barnes, was not immediately returned.

Brandy, whose real name is Brandy Norwood, has expressed condolences to the victim’s family. Witnesses at the scene have suggested she was extremely distraught following the accident, and there’s been no indication she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

According to the CHP report, the 27-year-old former “Moesha” star was driving a Land Rover on Interstate 405 on December 30 when traffic slowed suddenly. Her vehicle struck the back of a Honda driven by 38-year-old victim Awatef Aboudihaj.

Aboudihaj’s car hit a third vehicle, slid sideways into the highway divider and was then smashed by another car.

According to the coroner’s office, Aboudihaj died at a hospital from blunt-force injuries.
