Antony & Cleopatra, The Globe, 1 June

The decorative tiring house of the Globe was covered in upright planks of wood painted red. The stage pillars were left untouched, while the luxuriousness of Cleopatra&#;s court was suggested by blankets and cushions ready on stage for the first scene.

But it was the long pre-show with its increasingly frenetic dancing that created the required atmosphere of decadent exoticism into which wandered the upright messengers from Rome.

As the play proper began (), the messengers commented on how Antony was in thrall to Cleopatra, something the audience soon saw for themselves as the Egyptian queen (Eve Best) entered wearing knee-length trousers and a man&#;s shirt, brandishing Antony’s sword with the air of a pirate. Antony (Clive Wood) wore a loose-fitting gown topped off with a floral coronet. The two of them scampered around wearing each other’s clothes, something that would be referenced later in the text.

There were bored groans for her entourage when the messengers from Rome were mentioned. Cleopatra continued her skittish sarcasm about the latest instructions from Caesar.

Antony&#;s sense of fun continued to assert itself. When he commented that “The nobleness of life is to do thus…” he kissed Cleopatra passionately, demonstrating that his idea of true nobility was rather more Egyptian than Roman.

He approached the messengers and snapped to attention causing them to respond obediently in kind, before undermining the martial rigour of the moment by insisting in a camp voice “Speak not to us” followed by a swift, tripping exit with a delighted Cleopatra.

The Soothsayer (Jonathan Bonnici), his face painted blue, told both Charmian (Sirine Saba) and Iras (Rosie Hilal) that they would outlive their mistress (). This prediction would not prove accurate for Iras who would in fact die before the queen.

Cleopatra entered with a sheet wrapped round her, indicating that she and Antony we

Women and Turkish Shakespeares (Edited Volume) CFP

Women and Turkish Shakespeares (Edited Volume) Contact email: turkishshakespeares@ Call for Chapters Turkey has a long tradition of reading, translating and staging William Shakespeare’s plays as part of the country’s modernisation process. Yet, this long tradition has remained relatively obscure for the majority of both Turkish and non-Turkish academic and non-academic circles. The year not only marks the th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio, but also the th anniversaries of both the foundation of the Republic of Turkey and the first legal performance of female Turkish performers of Shakespeare’s plays in Turkey. To celebrate this tripartite anniversary, the Turkish Shakespeares Project and the Shakespeare in Turkey Festival have joined forces to document and celebrate past and present female performers, directors, translators, and academics, who have played an important role in the development of the appreciation of Shakespeare in Turkey. We are looking forward to receiving abstracts for 7, word essays (including Bibliography) that document and critically engage with how certain female figures have been influential in the development of Shakespeare productions and studies in Turkey. Deniz Bozer, Necla Çıkıgil Essays might discuss any of these female figures either as groups from a macro perspective (looking at chronological, spatial, class, gender, racial, linguistic, translational, ecological, and posthuman continuities or discontinuities) or from a micro perspective and focus on individual female figures (but papers should critically engage with these figures without reducing them to biographical entries). Papers can also engage with how Shakespeare’s works have been localised and (re)interpreted in various media adaptations. Please send a word abstract, a short bio, and your recent CV to Turkish Shakespeares (turkishshakespeares@) before the 15th of March We have already contacted two major

Türkiye&#;s living, mineral species exhibited in Kemaliye&#;s museum

The Professor Ali Demirsoy Natural History Museum in Kemaliye, Türkiye&#;s first natural history museum, showcases around 5, species of living organisms and minerals from all over the country

Professor Ali Demirsoy Natural History Museum in Kemaliye, Erzincan, established in with the contributions of professor Ali Demirsoy, stands as the first natural history museum in Türkiye.

A significant portion of the specimens exhibited in the museum consist of geological and biological samples collected from the region as part of the project “Investigation of Kemaliye and its surroundings in terms of biodiversity,” in which 48 scientists from 10 different universities took part.

Since its establishment, it has become a focal point of interest for the people of the region, students and ecotourism. Minerals, stones, soils, and all kinds of geological materials taken from different regions of our country and around Kemaliye are diagnosed by experts at the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) and exhibited in appropriate containers.

Mineral, crystal, soil and rock samples from various parts of Türkiye and the world are exhibited and fossil specimens belonging to the Gastropad, Bivalvia and Echinodermata groups of Kemaliye and its surroundings are identified and displayed on shelves.

There is a section where images of one-celled plants and animals are presented under a microscope. A habitat resembling the natural environment where lichens thrive has been created to showcase these ancient organisms, one of the first living groups in terrestrial ecosystems.

Moss samples collected and identified from Kemaliye are placed on exhibition boards. A significant number of invertebrates are presented in jars in formol and alcohol with their labels. Most of the insects are eviscerated and taxidermized according to the scientific sample preparation method, threaded i
