The African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), has come a long way since its inception five years ago. It is today regarded by many as the African version of the American OSCAR Awards and enjoys international recognition for its laudable achievements.

In the last edition held at the Cultural Centre Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Saturday April 4th, some of the Nollywood Stars spoke with our Correspondent on their impression about the continental events; Excerpts:

Hakeem Rahman: National Vice President, Actors Guild of Nigeria, (AGN)

- AMAA is one of the best things that has happened to the African Movie Industry as it affords movie makers and marketers the opportunity to come together every year. It has also encouraged excellence, hardwork and competition. Nollywood has not done much in terms of producing films that can compete favourably with that of other African countries in terms of production of films of international standards. This is probably why most of the awards were carted away by other African countries like Kenya, but we hope to get better in future.

Andy Chukwu (Actor)

AMAA has really done well over the years and the organisers have succeeded in bringing us together every year, particularly our counterparts in Nigeria and Africa. In terms of the choice of winners, they are doing well, that is why the number of participants continue to increase every year. AMAA improves every year, this is why this year’s event is better than last year.

Tom Njemanze (Actor)

Nollywood is a great thing that has happened to Africa. Without Nollywood, no African Magic we are going to do more great things to show our people of Africa that we are one. In terms of choice of winners, the judges follow due process, there is no bias in their choice of winners.

Gloria Young (Actress)

For AMAA, I will say so far so good, it is something that is bringing some kind of unity in Africa and Africa in diaspora.

  • Ini Edo & A Host of Nollywood Stars shimmer at the Premiere of “Memories Of My Heart”

We all look forward to that special moment when the spotlight is on us and we have achieved a lofty feat. For Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, that moment arrived on Friday 15th October 2010 at the premiere of her new movie “Memories Of My Heart“.

Ini has enjoyed a successful Nollywood career, starring in various top grossing movies and winning several awards along the way. With her production debut, “Memories Of My Heart”, she has scaled a new hurdle and is definitely proud of her achievement.

The premiere of the movie was a star studded affair, with superstars and movie industry heavyweights including Richard Mofe Damijo, Fred Amata, Segun Arinze, Zik Zulu-Okafor, Desmond Elliot, Emem Isong, Uche Jombo, Tonto Dike, Monalisa Chinda, Patience Ozokwor, Mike Ezuruonye, Annie Macaulay, Chidi Mokeme, Susan Peters all gracing the event.

According to BN Contributor & Nollywood Uncut Editor, Bola Aduwo who was at the event, “The event took off with interviews and photographs on the Red Carpet, then cocktails and networking. Guests were then ushered into the screening room. The event started a little behind schedule with opening prayers and the National Anthem being performed by Stella Damasus. The artist Slam performed a special track where he sang a song incorporating Ini’s name.

The actress who was accompanied by her parents, siblings and husband, Philip Ehiagwina swayed and moved to the beat. Stella Damasus later came on and sang a beautiful love song; setting the scene for the movie screening. After the screening, the movie received thunderous applause. Ini then gave a speech thanking everyone and called up for curtain call and recognition, those behind the production including Emem Isong who co-produced and Desmond Elliot who directed. Guests then left with their goody bags! It was a lovely event in all!”

    A COLOURFUL NIGHT OF CAROLS

Nseobong Okon-Ekong reports on the 9th edition of the Akwa Ibom Carols Festival, an event that set out to make a global mark in 2008 as ‘9999 Carols Night’. It has since been cited in the Guinness Book of World Records

Two hours before the advertised time of 5:00pm, a throng of people were already at the Uyo Township Stadium venue of the 2016 edition of one of the best attended events in Nigeria. It was a humourous contrast to observe that while the neighbouring Akpan Andem Market was progressively being deserted for the day, the stadium was being filled up. Cheerful and determined, those who came to witness the 9th edition of the Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols Festival were markedly different from their compatriots taking their leave of the market.

To be sure, another kind of trading activity was emerging at the entrance. Hawkers made brisk business selling snacks, soft drinks and water. A couple of them traded in ornamental items for decorating homes to reflect the Christmas mood, while others sold Christmas caps and other forms of bunting. Security personnel stationed at the gates frisked everyone to keep away suspicious elements and would be trouble makers. There were armed policemen who stood a good distance from the gate, keeping an eye on the stream of people who entered the stadium, but they did not take part in searching people.

Stationed on one side at the gate was an ambulance. The para-medical personnel who stood around the van wore a clearly marked bib which distinguished them. If the teeming crowd of persons haboured any concern for their safety in view of the tragic loss of lives at a collapsed church structure the previous Saturday, they did not show it at all. There was no hint of a reminder of what had become known as the Black Saturday. From the look of things, the para-medical teams were ready to handle any untoward situation. Some groups and individuals had clamoured for a cancellation of the 2016 Akwa Ibom Carol
