  • Lucknow lass says 'qubool hai' through net

LUCKNOW: Marriage in Muslims mean three important elements: 'dulah' (groom), 'baraat' (marriage procession) and 'rukhsati' (the girl leaving her family to accompany the groom back to his house). But when it finally happened for Nikhat Jahan, a commerce graduate from a middle-class Muslim family of Lucknow, all the three were missing. This because she said "qubool hai" (I agree) on Sunday through video conferencing before her groom who was sitting thousand of kilometers away in Canada.
"We had not planned it that way.It just happened," said Nikhat's father Ali Hasan. Naib Imam of Edgah, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali solemnised the wedding. "All the conditions of 'nikah' as defined in Islam were fulfilled and there is no problem in such marriages," said Maulana Rasheed, who gave his consent for the marriage a couple of days back.
According to Maulana Khalid Rasheed, first the groom's consent for the 'nikah' was sought in writing which was endorsed by three witnesses before whom he had signed in Canada. Then the same exercise was held at Lucknow on Sunday. "The role of the Internet was limited to the extent of the bride giving her consent before three witnesses in Lucknow and the entire process being watched by the groom and his family in Canada," Maulana Rasheed added, admitting that this was the first 'nikah' of its kind which he solemnised.
Family members of Nikhat said that her elder sister Nuzhat was married to Shahzaad Ali, who was settled in Canada. Shahzaad's friend, Faiz Mallick, a native of Pakistan, wanted to marry an Indian girl. And his decency had left Nuzhat impressed. Nuzhat mooted the proposal, which both the families accepted.
Since there were some travel problems for Faiz, the two families decided to formalise the matrimony through Internet. Even if the groom had come to India,
