FILIPINO MIDDLES: MADDIE MADAYAG - THE GLIDING SWAN - PART I (Post 142)

She floats like a Swan ... grace on the water

Just when you think you've caught her

She glides across the water ...

are lines of my favorite songs from Echo & The Bunnymen, the Liverpool Band so hastily compared to The Beatles in the early '80s (Echo's music is so much more articulated and perhaps less digestible than the legendary Mersey-side 4s).

LOL! You are all probably asking yourself what this has got to do with Maddie. Simple:

To me, my perception of The Essence of Volleyball, my idea of Dynamics, Miss Maddie Madayag is by far the most elegant and graceful player ever walked on a Filipino court:

A BEAUTIFUL SWAN!

Maddie is queenly, graceful and elegant; she glides (& slides) across the court with enviable coordination. Her movements always make sense to the Laws of Aesthetics and go straight to the point. She fascinates the Purists.

Her body is the perfect definition of a Middle player: long limbs, thin waist, wide and square shoulders, reversed triangle of the upper back group, perfect definition of the 8 muscles around the glenohumeral joint, strong neck, big and nervous hands, visual focus and ... killer instinct.

I love watching Maddie on a UAAP court. She gives me the idea of essentiality; of superiority; of being there by mistake; of belonging to a higher level than a simple "local" thing.

I have no idea what the "People Up There" think when they "select(?)" a National Team. Not at all! I only know that I would challenge any Volleyball genius of this Country to find somebody as "aesthetically perfect and mechanically smooth" as Miss Madayag.

If Coach Oliver doesn't mind me saying, I'll confess it here and now: if I could steal only 1 player from Ateneo de Manila, that would be Maddie! ... Why? Because ...

Maddie Madayag broke an 11-year-old UAAP record last Wednesday, and in the process, helped ensure that the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles’ winning streak in the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Volleyball Tournament continued for a seventh consecutive game.

    The veteran middle blocker scored a career-best 23 points – 11 from blocks – as the Lady Eagles recovered from a two-set deficit to take down UST in a five-set thriller, 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Madayag made life difficult for UST’s spikers, particularly Dimdim Pacres. She tallied her record-breaking 11th block in the fourth set by rejecting Sisi Rondina. Madayag then stepped up on offense in the deciding fifth frame, as she put the Lady Eagles ahead for good, 11-10, with her trademark running attack.

Her superb performance earned Madayag the Chooks To Go-Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week, making her the third Lady Eagle to receive the distinction after Kat Tolentino and Bea de Leon.

“I’m speechless, I don’t know what to say,” Madayag said after being informed that she had broken the record formerly held by La Salle’s Celine Hernandez, who had 9 blocks against the Adamson University in Season 70.

“I just played my game, and contributed whatever I can for the team, and I just gave it my all,” added the middle blocker.

Thanks in part to Madayag’s efforts, the Lady Eagles are now at 7-1 in the women’s volleyball tournament, putting them at the top of the league standings.

They will look to keep their hold of the top spot when they take on the University of the Philippines in round 2 of the Battle of Katipunan on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Madayag beat UST’s Sisi Rondina – who tied Alyssa Valdez’s scoring mark with 35 points in a losing effort – as well as Tots Carlos of the University of the Philippines, Far Easte

MADDIE Madayag was so focused on leading Ateneo back from a two-set deficit that she didn't realize until later that she had set a new UAAP record for blocks in the comeback win over University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday.

Madayag tallied 11 of Ateneo’s 24 blocks in the 19-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-11 victory over the Tigresses to surpass former De La Salle opposite spiker Celine Hernandez’s previous record of nine blocks set 11 years ago.

Madayag was named the Player of the Game but she wasn’t aware of the record she had just set even when scribes asked her about it during the post-game interview.

“Seryoso? Eleven blocks? I didn’t know that. Oh my gosh. I’m speechless, I don’t know what to say,” beamed the graduating middle blocker, who finished with 23 points off 11 blocks, 11 spikes and an ace.

The 5-foot-11 star said all she wanted was to lead the Lady Eagles back from two sets down.

“I just played my game, I guess, and contributed whatever I can for the team and I just gave it my all,” Madayag said “This is for my team, this is for the school, this is for the Lord, and not really for myself because it’s a team thing.”

Madayag's heroics put to naught a similarly impressive performance from UST star Sisi Rondina, who scored 35 points to tie Alyssa Valdez’s league record which she set in Season 75 in a second-round game against Adamson.

The Davao native said she has nothing but respect for Rondina.

“Sisi is a really good player, she’s very good, she knows what to do talaga. You can see that she’s very experienced because even when she was in Cebu naman, she played really good,” Madayag said.
