  • Special Envoy and Minister of Planning in Ghana, Professor George Gyan-Baffour, on Tuesday 28 May 2019 met with His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio at State House to discuss bilateral relations between the two West African nations.

    The two men spoke on a wide range of issues including regional and sub-regional cooperation and talked about deepening the already existing bilateral relations they enjoyed.

    In his brief remarks, President Bio said: “Our countries are very close in terms of our relationship and we are open up to further strengthen that. So, it is a pleasure to have you here”.

    It could be recalled that in October last year, the Rtd. Brig. General made his first official visit to Accra, the capital of Ghana, as President of Sierra Leone where he was welcomed by his counterpart, President Nana Akufo-Addo.

    The two Heads of State had also met at a separate bilateral summit in Accra where they both expressed satisfaction with the warm and cordial relations that existed between the two countries and reaffirmed their determination to widen the ties.

    Ghanaian former footballer (born 1985)

    Asamoah Gyan (ASS-ə-MOH-ə JAHN; born 22 November 1985) is a Ghanaian former professional footballer who played as a striker. He is a former captain of the Ghana national team.

    Gyan began his career in 2003 with Ghana Premier League club Liberty Professionals, scoring ten goals in sixteen matches. He then spent three seasons with Serie A club Udinese via two seasons loan at Modena, netting on fifteen occasions in 53 league matches and at Udinese where he scored 11 times in 39 league matches. In 2008, Gyan joined Ligue 1 club Rennes, netting fourteen times in forty-eight league matches during two seasons. In 2010, Gyan joined then Premier League club Sunderland, breaking the club's transfer record and netting on ten occasions in thirty-four Premier League matches during two seasons.

    In 2011, Gyan joined Al Ain of the UAE Pro League on loan and became the league's top goalscorer, scoring 22 times in 18 matches. In the following season, Gyan permanently joined Al Ain and helped them retain the Pro League title, once again, finishing as the league's top goalscorer with an impressive 31 goals in 22 matches. In the 2013–14 league season, Gyan finished top scorer for a record third time, with 29 goals in 26 matches.

    Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014FIFA World Cups. With six goals, he is the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup. Gyan also represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in seven Africa Cup of Nations (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019), helping them finish in third place in 2008 and as runners-up in 2010 and 2015.     Ignatius Baffour-Awuah (born 24 August 1966), a Ghanaian politician is the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

    Early life and education

    He was born on 24 August 1966 and hails from Nsoatre in the Bono Region of Ghana. He had his bachelor's degree in accounting in 1992. He also had his post-graduate diploma in management consultancy in 2017.

    Political life

    He joined the New Patriotic Party and was a member of President Kufour's government as a District Chief Executive of the Sunyani District Assembly. He later became the deputy regional minister for the Brong-Ahafo region and subsequently became the regional minister under the same Kuffour administration. He ran for Member of Parliament for the Sunyani West constituency and won in the 2008 parliamentary elections. His party, the NPP however lost the presidential election. He was re-elected as MP in the same constituency in 2012 and 2016, 2020. Unfortunately, he lost the parliamentary seat to Hon. Millicent Amankwah in the 2024 election.

    Cabinet minister

    In May 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named Baffour-Awuah as part of nineteen ministers who would form his cabinet. The names of the 19 ministers were submitted to the Parliament of Ghana and announced by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Prof. Mike Ocquaye.
